Dragonwilds After 1.0: The Prayer Skill, Luminance & What Jagex Promised Next

Card showing the Dragonwilds roadmap through 1.0 and into the winter update.

RuneScape: Dragonwilds leaves Early Access on 15 September 2026, and the obvious question for anyone about to invest in a world or a server is whether that is the end of it. Jagex have answered directly, and the answer is no: a Prayer skill and an update currently called "Luminance" are both scheduled for December, and their Associate Creative Director put it bluntly — "Our 1.0 release on September 15th is not the end of Dragonwilds. Far from it."

What 1.0 Actually Is

FieldDetail
Date15 September 2026
Headline contentThe Scorned Wilderness — concluding Kuldra's Saga
PlatformsPC (Steam + Epic), PS5, Xbox and Switch 2 — simultaneously
CrossplayYes, between platforms

The Scorned Wilderness is a raid, and Jagex chose that word carefully: "we know that for those of you chasing Twisted Bows, ending up at the toothy end of Zebak, or who've earned the scars from the Liberation of Mazcab, RuneScape Raids mean something. We agree."

Their definition: "A Raid is typically a high-end challenge pitched against a player, or groups. You'll be subjected to a gauntlet, delving into a dungeon, raiding a tomb, or… say… charging into an Anima storm to take down a God-Eater."

It is explicitly not another region. Previous major updates were "expansive continents that add a new region, rich with resources, quests, secrets and lore." Scorned Wilderness is different — "the culmination of our learnings from everything we've built" — and it ends the story of Kuldra, the Dragon Queen described as "fused with divine blood and now housing the elemental power of my kin."

December: Prayer and "Luminance"

Card describing the winter update bringing the Prayer skill and Luminance.

Two things land in December, per Jagex's roadmap:

ComingDetail
The Prayer SkillMoved to the Winter Update — it had been scheduled earlier
"Luminance"An update "we're currently developing — currently under the name" — the name is provisional

Prayer was deliberately delayed, and the trade was Agility being pulled forward to July in its place. That reshuffle is why Agility arrived when it did.

Luminance is a codename, not a title. Jagex flagged it as provisional, and gave no content detail beyond an "Oooh." Do not plan around it — there is nothing published to plan around.

What this means if you are starting a world now: there is a scheduled content update roughly three months after 1.0, which is a reasonable argument for building somewhere you intend to keep rather than treating 1.0 as a finish line.

Jagex's Stated Philosophy

Card quoting Jagex on treating Dragonwilds as an ongoing project.

The reasoning behind the roadmap is worth reading, because it tells you how the game is likely to be run after launch:

"At Jagex we look at our RuneScape titles as ongoing projects, always. They are never done, because they continuously evolve. That has been the way for twenty-five years of adventuring on Gielinor. Changes, fixes, overhauls, new content, amazing new sagas, new raids, new bosses, new quest areas — it's a continuous flow of updates."

They describe Dragonwilds as "a long voyage with many epic stages, many cycles, and many sagas."

The Early Access record supports the claim. In roughly eighteen months the game received four regions (Ghornfell, Fellhollow, Dowdun Reach, Umbral Sands), five or more skills (Ranged, Farming, Fishing, Runecrafting reworks, Agility), a combat rework, a health system rework, a crafting bench overhaul, mounts, dedicated servers, Creative Mode and Custom World settings.

And they revise aggressively. The Runecrafting conversion ratio was changed, reverted the same day, and later re-proposed at a third value. Jagex's framing: "this is fundamentally the benefit of us being in Early Access." That agility is likely to slow after 1.0, when the audience is broader and console certification is involved — worth factoring into how much you rely on any single balance number.

What This Means for a Server

Card giving practical planning advice for Dragonwilds server owners around 1.0.

    Three practical consequences.

    1. Back up before 15 September. A major version transition is the most disruptive moment for any save, and this one also brings four new platforms onto the same servers. On managed hosting that is one click; self-hosting, copy your .sav files out of RSDragonwilds/Saved/Savegames and rename them.

    2. Expect a version-matching scramble. Dragonwilds servers must run the same build as their clients — "this is likely to happen any time an update or hotfix is released" — and a mismatch makes the server disappear from the list entirely. With console players joining for the first time, launch week is the likeliest moment for that confusion.

    3. Plan the world you want to keep. With a scheduled December update, a world started now has a reason to persist. Remember that Custom Worlds and Creative Mode require their own character types and that progress does not transfer between world types — so decide the world type before people invest levels in it.

One open question worth tracking. In December 2025, Jagex described plans for two kinds of rented server: "moddable, customizable servers where you can adjust the rules and settings as you like" and "'Vanilla' Dedicated Servers which cannot be modified, and will be fully secure", flagged differently in the server list. We have not seen a later post confirming that this shipped as described — if secured servers matter to your group, verify it in the client rather than assuming.

Practical tips

  • 1.0 on 15 September is not the end — Jagex said so explicitly.
  • The Scorned Wilderness is a raid, not another region — a gauntlet ending with Kuldra.
  • December brings the Prayer skill and an update codenamed "Luminance" — the name is provisional.
  • Agility was pulled forward in exchange for Prayer moving back.
  • Back up before the 15th. Four new platforms join the same servers.
  • Version mismatch makes a server vanish from the list — expect it during launch week.
  • The moddable vs secured server split was announced in 2025 but we have found no confirmation it shipped. Verify.

Running your own RuneScape: Dragonwilds server

A game with a published roadmap past its own 1.0 is a game worth building something permanent in — and permanence is exactly what a dedicated server provides over a host-and-play session. A gamever Dragonwilds server keeps your world available around the clock for up to six players, applies updates automatically so client and server versions stay matched through launch week and every hotfix after it, and takes one-click backups before disruptive moments like 15 September and the December update.

Conclusion

Dragonwilds 1.0 arrives on 15 September 2026 with the Scorned Wilderness raid concluding Kuldra's Saga, launching simultaneously on PC, PS5, Xbox and Switch 2 with crossplay. Jagex have been explicit that this is a milestone rather than an ending — "Our 1.0 release on September 15th is not the end of Dragonwilds. Far from it" — with the Prayer skill and an update provisionally called "Luminance" both scheduled for December. Their stated approach is to treat the game as "a long voyage with many epic stages", and the Early Access record backs it: four regions, several skills, and reworks of combat, health and crafting in eighteen months. For a server owner the takeaways are simple: back up before the 15th, expect version-matching confusion during launch week, and decide your world type before people invest in it.
