Doric's Quest in Dragonwilds: Three Rare Weapons, and You Keep Them

Doric's Quest sends you after three weapons out of Fellhollow legend — the undead ranger's bow, the necromancer's staff and the shadow sword. Two of the three recipes sit in dragonkin effigies inside named vaults. The third is a rare zogre drop you may have to farm. And the detail that makes the whole thing far less painful than it looks: if you already own one of the weapons, you keep it.
Quest Details

| Field | Detail |
|---|---|
| Type | Secondary |
| Start | Speak to Doric |
| Requires | Partial completion of Withering Heights for Fellhollow access, and Seeking Salvation |
| Items needed | 1 undead ranger's bow, 1 necromancer staff, 1 shadow sword |
| Recommended | Good armour and weapons, food |
| Enemies | Enemies of the Vekchenven Kara and Skekven Kara vaults, plus zogres |
Two prerequisites, not one. You need partial Withering Heights for the region and Seeking Salvation completed outright. That makes Doric's Quest a mid-chain rather than an early one.
Note the reward history. The quest's update log records that it no longer rewards the Axe itself — so if you are following an older guide that promises one, that changed.
You Do Not Have to Craft Twice
The single most useful line in the walkthrough is repeated after all three objectives:
If you already own the item, you do not need to craft it, the item will be kept.
That is stated three separate times, once per weapon, which suggests Jagex expected players to worry about it. The consequence is straightforward: anything you have already found and built counts, and handing it to Doric does not consume it.
So the first thing to do on picking up this quest is check your inventory and storage. If you have been through Vekchenven Kara or Skekven Kara already, one or two of the three may be sitting in a chest.
The Undead Ranger's Bow
Enter the Skekven Kara vault and find a dragonkin effigy. The recipe is in the effigy; craft the bow and return to Doric.
That is the whole objective. Dragonkin effigies are fixed recipe containers, so this is a navigation problem rather than a luck problem — get into the vault, find the effigy, take the recipe.
The Necromancer's Staff
The same structure in a different vault. The recipe sits in a dragonkin effigy in Vekchenven Kara. Craft and return.
Two vaults, two effigies, two guaranteed recipes. Neither of these steps involves a drop roll, which is why the third one stands out so sharply.
The Shadow Sword Is the Real Objective

The third weapon breaks the pattern:
The recipe can be found by killing a zogre. The recipe is a rare drop, so you might need to kill them more than once.
This is the step that decides how long the quest takes. The other two are walks; this is a farm with no published rate.
There are three zogre locations:
| Location | Notes |
|---|---|
| A cave within Emberwood | |
| Eastern side of Silverthorn Keep | |
| Vekchenven Kara | As the vault's boss |
The Vekchenven Kara zogre is the efficient one, because it is in the same vault as the necromancer's staff effigy. Doing that vault once gives you a guaranteed recipe and a roll on the rare one in a single trip.
Plan for repeat visits. "Rare drop" with no number attached means the honest expectation is several attempts, so treat the shadow sword as the quest's actual length and the other two as preamble.
The Efficient Route

- Check your storage first. Any of the three you already own counts and is kept.
- Run Vekchenven Kara. Take the necromancer's staff recipe from the effigy and fight the zogre boss for a shadow sword roll.
- Run Skekven Kara for the undead ranger's bow recipe.
- If the shadow sword has not dropped, add the Emberwood cave and eastern Silverthorn Keep zogres to your rotation — or repeat the Vekchenven Kara boss.
- Craft what you are missing and return to Doric.
Do not craft anything you already have. The quest keeps the item either way, and the materials are better spent elsewhere.
Running your own Dragonwilds server
A rare drop with no published rate is a farm that spans sessions, and farms only span sessions on a world that persists. A gamever Dragonwilds server keeps Ashenfall persistent with automatic updates and one-click backups.
Conclusion
Doric's Quest needs partial Withering Heights for Fellhollow access and Seeking Salvation completed, and asks for three weapons: the undead ranger's bow, the necromancer's staff and the shadow sword. Two are straightforward — the bow's recipe sits in a dragonkin effigy in Skekven Kara and the staff's in an effigy in Vekchenven Kara, both guaranteed rather than rolled. The shadow sword is the real quest: its recipe is a rare zogre drop with no published rate, from zogres in a cave in Emberwood, on the eastern side of Silverthorn Keep, and as the Vekchenven Kara vault boss — which makes that vault the efficient stop, since one trip yields a guaranteed recipe and a roll on the rare one. The line the walkthrough repeats after every objective is the one to act on first: if you already own the item you do not need to craft it, and it is kept — so check your storage before spending materials. Note also that the quest no longer rewards the Axe itself, contrary to older guides.
