Configuring Popular Rust Plugins (Kits, Gather, Stacks)

A Rust base interior

Installing a plugin is only step one; the config file is where you actually shape how it behaves. This guide shows the general config workflow on gamever and walks through three of the most-used Rust plugins — Kits, GatherManager and StackSizeController — so you can see the pattern. It assumes you've already got Oxide or Carbon and know how to install a plugin.

The config workflow (every plugin)

  1. The plugin writes a default config the first time it loads:

  • Oxide → oxide/config/<Plugin>.json
  • Carbon → carbon/configs/<Plugin>.json

  1. Edit that JSON in the File Manager.
  2. Reload the plugin so it re-reads the file:

   oxide.reload <Plugin> # Oxide
   c.reload <Plugin> # Carbon

Valid JSON matters — a stray comma breaks the file and the plugin falls back to defaults (the Console will tell you). If in doubt, delete the config and let the plugin regenerate a clean one.

Kits

Kits give players starter or perk loadouts via /kit.

  • Define each kit's items, a cooldown, and which permission can claim it.
  • Gate premium kits behind a permission and grant it to your VIP group: oxide.grant group vip kits.vipkit.
  • Typical use: a free starter kit for everyone, better kits for VIP.

GatherManager

    Controls how much players harvest.

  • Set gather-rate multipliers for wood, stone, metal, sulfur, etc. (e.g. 2x on a modded server).
  • Also adjusts quarry/pump output and pickup amounts.
  • Keep rates sane — too high trivialises the game; a "2x" server is a common, popular middle ground.

StackSizeController

    Sets how high items stack.

  • Define stack sizes per item or category (e.g. larger stacks for resources, unchanged for weapons).
  • Hugely quality-of-life on modded servers; leave weapons/ammo modest to avoid balance issues.

Permissions recap

Most plugins gate features behind permissions you grant to groups (see managing plugins):

oxide.grant group default kits.use
oxide.grant group vip gathermanager.boost

Additional Tips

  • Edit then reload — the server won't re-read a config on its own.
  • Keep valid JSON — one typo and the plugin ignores your file; check the Console.
  • Back up a config before a big edit (copy the text out).
  • Don't over-boost — extreme gather/stacks make a server feel pointless; moderate rates retain players.
  • Document your rates in the server description so players know what they're joining.

Conclusion

Every Rust plugin follows the same loop on gamever: it writes a JSON config, you edit it in the File Manager, and you reload. Master that with Kits, GatherManager and StackSizeController and you can configure anything — tuning your server's gather rates, stacks and perks exactly to your community's taste.
