Building in Dragonwilds: The Construction Skill, Kits & Eye of Oculus

Construction is a real skill in RuneScape: Dragonwilds, with its own levels, bonuses and unlocks — and the single most useful thing in it arrives early. Eye of Oculus at Construction level 11 is a building camera that detaches your view from your character, and combined with remote building from linked chests it turns base construction from a fiddly first-person job into something you can actually plan. Here is how the system fits together.
The Construction Skill
| Level | Unlock | What it gives |
|---|---|---|
| 3 | Middle Ground | Medium-sized building pieces |
| 5 | Fine Details | Small building pieces |
| 8 | Sacred Geometry | Triangular pieces |
| 11 | Eye of Oculus (spell) | The building camera |
| 16 | Creature Comforts | Furniture and decorations |
| 18 | Mighty Oak | The next building tier — the T2 / Oak set |
| 20 | Summon Shelter (spell) | A temporary shelter, conjured on the spot |
| 22 | Countryside | Thatched roofs |
| 30 | Bastion | Additional stone pieces |
| 35 | Baroque Stone | More stone pieces |
| 40 | Personal Chest (spell) | Access your personal storage chest from anywhere |
| 45 | Desert Dweller | Additional Kharidian pieces |
| 99 | Construction Cape | The skillcape |
Two entries in that list are spells rather than recipes, and both are easy to miss.
Summon Shelter at 20 conjures a temporary shelter — which matters far more than it sounds in Umbral Sands, where Jagex made hasty shelter-building the counter to Scorch.
Personal Chest at 40 is the single biggest quality-of-life unlock in the tree. It lets you "access your personal storage chest from anywhere" — a different thing from chests being remotely readable by crafting benches. If you are deciding how far to push Construction, 40 is the number.
Note also that thatched roofs are gated at Construction 22, separately from the Dowdun Reach region kit that introduced the style.
Eye of Oculus is the unlock that matters most. It is a camera spell — Jagex's fixes reference "the Space Bar and the C buttons… moving the camera up and down in the Eye of Oculus Skill Spell" — so it lifts and moves your viewpoint while you build.
And it works with remote storage. A later fix confirmed "building from linked chests now works correctly with Eye of Oculus" — which, combined with all chests being remotely accessible for crafting, means you can build from a detached camera without standing next to your materials.
Two quirks worth knowing:
- Casting Eye of Oculus in the Saradomin Temple used to push the camera under the map — fixed, but a good indication that interiors can behave oddly.
- With an X-Input controller, the D-pad function was duplicated on the build-mode UI — also fixed.
The Building Kits

| Kit / set | Where it came from | Contents |
|---|---|---|
| T2 (Oak) | Base game, Construction 18 (Mighty Oak) | The next full building tier |
| Castle Kit — Tier 3 | Fellhollow | "Foundations, walls, stairs, floors, doorways, windows, everything a growing base needs" |
| Dowdun Reach pieces | Dowdun Reach | Thatched roofing, chandeliers, stained glass windows |
| Kharidian pieces | Umbral Sands | An additional set, desert-themed |
Jagex describe the system as offering "hundreds of unique building pieces", and the pattern is clear: every major region has added to it.
The Castle Kit is the structural one. It is the first complete kit — foundations through windows — and it is what turns a shelter into a building.
The later additions are largely aesthetic, but that matters more on a shared server than solo: chandeliers and stained glass are what a base looks like to the five other people who visit it.
A base built before Fellhollow has considerably less to work with than one built after Umbral Sands, which is worth knowing if you are returning and wondering why other people's bases look different.
Functional Furniture

Several pieces do real work, and they are easy to dismiss as furnishing:
| Piece | Effect |
|---|---|
| Beds | Proximity reduces Hunger, Thirst and Fatigue drain — all three |
| Chairs | Reduce all three when you sit in them |
| The Pylon | Intercepts lightning strikes in a radius — makes storm-prone sites buildable |
| Cape Racks, Cape Hooks, Weapon Racks | Display gear, and can be set to Private and locked |
| Armour Mannequins | Hold armour sets and capes |
| Ore & Stone Storage | Mining level 62 |
| Lumber Storage | Woodcutting level 40 |
| Composter | Farming input |
The bed mechanic is the one nothing announces. Being near a bed — not sleeping in it — slows all three survival meters, which makes bed placement a design decision. On a six-player base, one bed does not reach everyone; place several where people actually work.
Chairs are the same idea, actively. Sitting through a craft timer is mechanically correct rather than roleplay.
Set your racks to Private as you build them. The lock exists "so that other players cannot steal gear" — and it is far easier to do at build time than to remember later, once five people have joined.
The Pylon comes from The Great Body Robbery, Jagex's "longest Secondary Quest to date" in Bloodblight Swamp. If your group has written off a scenic but stormy build site, this is the item that reopens it.
Practical Base Layout

Remote crafting access rewrote the rules. Because all chests are remotely accessible for crafting, the old approach of stashing materials beside each bench is obsolete. A layout that works:
- One central storage room. The benches reach it regardless, so scattering stashes only creates confusion on a shared server.
- The four gear benches grouped — Armour, Blacksmith, Fletching, Mystic Forge. The crossbow chain crosses two of them, so distance costs real time.
- Kitchen together: a Grill indoors (no fuel cost, unlike a campfire) plus a Range or Stone Range.
- Beds distributed, not gathered into one bedroom.
- Chairs by the benches, where people wait on timers.
- Racks and mannequins somewhere visible — and Private from the moment you place them.
- Lumber Storage at Woodcutting 40, and Ore & Stone Storage at Mining 62 — the lumber one arrives far earlier, so plan the space for it first.
Two things to check before you build in a new spot:
- Weather. Without a Pylon, lightning-prone terrain is a bad site.
- Trees. Jagex fixed an issue where "trees no longer grow back through your base's foundations in Fellhollow" — worth knowing if you saw that on an older build.
And do not forget the world outside the base. Traders now exist across all of Ashenfall and "accept some of your materials and spare loot in exchange for stuff in their shops" — which gives the overflow from a big build somewhere to go.
Practical tips
- Construction is a skill. Eye of Oculus at level 11 is a building camera — unlock it early.
- Personal Chest at level 40 lets you reach your storage from anywhere. The best reason to push the skill.
- Summon Shelter at 20 conjures a temporary shelter — useful against Scorch in the desert.
- Thatched roofs are gated at Construction 22.
- Building from linked chests works with Eye of Oculus — build without standing on your materials.
- The Castle Kit (Fellhollow) is the first complete structural set.
- Beds slow all three survival meters by proximity — spread them around a shared base.
- Chairs do the same when you sit. Sit through craft timers.
- Set Cape and Weapon Racks to Private as you place them, not later.
- The Pylon intercepts lightning — it makes storm-prone sites viable.
Running your own RuneScape: Dragonwilds server
A base is the one thing in a survival game that genuinely needs to persist — nobody builds seriously in a world that only exists while a particular person is online. A gamever Dragonwilds server keeps your build, its storage and its Private racks available around the clock for up to six players, updates automatically so client and server versions never drift apart, and takes one-click backups before disruptive changes.
Conclusion
Building in Dragonwilds runs on the Construction skill, which carries its own bonuses and gates pieces by level — Eye of Oculus, the building camera, arrives at level 11 and is the unlock worth rushing, especially since building from linked chests works with it — while Summon Shelter at 20 and, above all, Personal Chest at 40 (storage access from anywhere) are the later payoffs. The piece library has grown with every region: the Castle Kit from Fellhollow is the first complete structural set, Dowdun Reach added thatched roofing, chandeliers and stained glass, and Umbral Sands brought Kharidian pieces. Several items that look decorative are not — beds reduce Hunger, Thirst and Fatigue drain by proximity, chairs do the same when sat in, and the Pylon intercepts lightning strikes so storm-prone sites become buildable. And because all chests are remotely accessible for crafting, the right layout is one central store with the four gear benches grouped beside it.
