Beehives in Valheim: Queen Bees Are Finite, and There Are About a Hundred Per World

Here is the fact that changes how you treat Valheim's beehives: Queen bees are not renewable. The wiki is explicit — "there is a fixed number per world determined by the number of randomly spawned wild beehive," estimated at around one hundred per world.
Every beehive you build costs one of them permanently, and no amount of exploring generates more.

The Beehive

| Field | Value |
|---|---|
| Built at | Workbench |
| Materials | Wood x10, Queen bee x1 |
| Durability | 100 |
| Size | 1.8 x 1.7 x 1.8 |
| Rain damage | No |
| Production | One Honey per ~20 real-time minutes |
| Capacity | Four Honey at a time |
A full hive holds four honey and takes about 80 minutes to fill. After that it stops, so a honey farm is only productive if somebody empties it.
Ten Wood is nothing; the Queen bee is everything. The build cost is trivial and the constraint is entirely the finite queen.
Rain does not damage it, so hives can sit on an outside wall without a roof over them — which matters, because a roof works against them.
Where Bees Are Happy
The flavour text is a status readout, not decoration:
| Message | Meaning |
|---|---|
| "The bees are happy." | Producing |
| "The bees are angry." | Conditions not met |
| "The bees are sleeping." | Night, or rainy weather — always |
Two conditions decide happiness:
- Less than 60% cover. A hive tucked deep inside a roofed building will not work.
- A compatible biome — Meadows, Black Forest or Plains only.
That rules out the Swamp, Mountain, Mistlands, Plains-adjacent Ashlands and Deep North for honey production, even though wild nests appear near Swamps.
Night and rain always stop them, regardless of placement, so the ~20-minute figure is a daytime, dry-weather rate.
Bee Nests: Where Queens Come From

| Field | Value |
|---|---|
| Found in | Abandoned Houses, Abandoned Villages, Draugr Villages (Meadows) and Contested Towers (Black Forest) |
| Durability | 50 |
| Weak to | Fire |
| Immune to | Poison, Spirit |
| Drops | 1 Queen bee, 1–3 Honey |
They fight back. A Bee Nest deals 10 poison damage in a 4-metre radius when attacked, and attacks every 4 seconds if you stand too close.
At 50 durability they die fast, so the safe method is a ranged hit or a quick melee swing followed by stepping outside four metres.
Fire is their weakness, which makes a fire arrow the cleanest solution.
Each nest is one queen. Since the world holds roughly a hundred nests, that is roughly a hundred hives — for the entire lifetime of the world, shared between everyone on it.
Honey Itself

| Field | Value |
|---|---|
| Health | 8 |
| Stamina | 35 |
| Duration | 900 seconds |
| Healing | 1 hp/tick |
| Weight | 0.2, stack 50 |
As food it is unremarkable — 8 health exactly matches a Blueberry and sits well under a Cloudberry's 13 — but 35 stamina over 900 seconds beats both, which makes it a genuine early stamina item.
Its real job is mead. Honey is required for every mead base in the game, and almost all of them take Honey x10:
- Minor healing — Honey x10, Blueberries x5, Raspberries x10, Dandelion x1
- Medium healing — Honey x10, Bloodbag x4, Raspberries x10, Dandelion x1
- Major healing — Honey x10, Blood clot x4, Royal jelly x5
- Frost resistance — Honey x10, Thistle x5, Bloodbag x2, Greydwarf eye x1
- Minor eitr — Honey x10, Sap x5, Jotun puffs x2, Magecap x5
- Medium stamina — Honey x10, Cloudberries x10, Yellow mushroom x10
Ten honey per base, four honey per hive, and most bases produce six finished meads — so a serious mead operation needs three full hives per batch, or one hive emptied three times.
Build hives early and build several. The queens are finite, the production is slow, and the mead economy runs on honey more than on anything else.

Running your own Valheim server
A hive that fills in eighty minutes and then stops only pays off on a world that is running while you are away. A gamever Valheim server keeps it persistent for up to 10 players, with one-click backups.
Conclusion
Valheim's Queen bees are finite — a fixed number per world, roughly one hundred, determined by the wild Bee Nests that generated with the map — so every beehive you build spends one permanently. The hive itself costs only Wood x10 and one Queen bee, has 100 durability, takes no rain damage, and produces one Honey per ~20 real-time minutes up to a cap of four. It only works with less than 60% cover and in the Meadows, Black Forest or Plains, and it always sleeps at night and in rain. Nests are found in Abandoned Houses, Abandoned Villages, Draugr Villages and Contested Towers, have 50 durability, are weak to fire, and deal 10 poison damage in a 4-metre radius while attacking every 4 seconds if you stand close. Each nest gives one Queen bee and 1–3 Honey. The honey itself is ordinary food — 8 health, 35 stamina, 900 seconds — but it is required for every mead base, almost all at Honey x10, which is three full hives per batch.
