Bears, Viles & Bottled Blobs: Valheim's Newest Enemies and Their Gear

Call to Arms added the first genuinely new enemies Valheim has seen in a while — the Bear and the Vile — and each one carries a full armour set, a trophy, and a fist weapon. Alongside them came five throwable Bottled Blobs, two battleaxes, and a set of behaviour details that matter more than they look: bears can swim, and Viles belong to the Plains Monster faction, not the Undead.
The Bear
| Drops | Use |
|---|---|
| Bear Hide | Armour crafting |
| Bear Paw | Fist weapon material |
| Bear Trophy | Trophy |
| Bear Meat | Food |
Its full set:
- Chest: Patterns of the Bear
- Legs: Loincloth of the Bear
- Helmet: Headdress of the Bear
- Fist Weapon: Paws of the Bear
And a furniture piece: the Bearskin Rug.
The behaviour detail worth knowing is that bears can swim. Iron Gate added this during testing — "Bears are now able to swim" — which removes the classic Valheim escape route. Water is not safety from a bear.
Two other tuning notes from the test branch: bears "should no longer get stuck behind trees and boulders as much", and both new creatures now "take 4 seconds to disappear after death instead of 8" — so loot them promptly.
The Vile

| Drops | Use |
|---|---|
| Vile Ribcage | Armour crafting |
| Vile Trophy | Trophy |
| Rotten Meat | "A chance to drop" — in addition to Bear Meat |
Its full set:
- Chest: Vilebone Cage
- Legs: Vilebone Drapes
- Helmet: Vilebone Visage
- Fist Weapon: Vilebone Maulclaws
The single most useful fact about the Vile is its faction, and it changed during testing: "Viles are now part of the Plains Monster faction instead of the Undead faction."
That is not trivia. Faction determines what fights what and what turns up in raids. A creature that looks skeletal but counts as a Plains monster will not behave the way your instincts about Swamp undead suggest — and it will not be affected by anything that targets undead specifically.
The Vile dropping Bear Meat is a genuine oddity and Iron Gate's wording confirms it is intended: the Rotten Meat chance was added "in addition to Bear Meat". So Viles were already a Bear Meat source.
The Ghost also received a visual overhaul in the same update, and supplies two of the new materials: Ectoplasm and the Ghost Trophy.
Fist Weapons and Battleaxes

Fists are not a new weapon class — they have existed since launch, and were renamed from "Unarmed" at the Frost Caves update. What Call to Arms added is two new fist weapons, one for each new enemy:
| Fist weapon | Damage | Stamina |
|---|---|---|
| Bare fists | blunt 5 | 4 |
| Paws of the Bear (new) | slash 25/37 | 6 |
| Vilebone Maulclaws (new) | pierce 60, slash 20/32 | 12 |
| Flesh Rippers (pre-existing) | slash 60/72 | 10 |
Note where they sit. Flesh Rippers still out-damage Paws of the Bear by a wide margin — so the new pair are themed additions, not a top tier. The Vilebone Maulclaws are the interesting one, carrying pierce as their main damage type rather than slash.
The class mechanics are worth knowing regardless of which pair you use:
- The punch is a 2-hit combo, and the second punch — the left hand — does double damage.
- The kick is the secondary attack, and it staggers at 6× the normal rate with 80 knockback against a punch's 20.
- Bare fists cost less stamina than most weapons and spend no weapon durability, which makes them genuinely sensible against the weakest enemies.
So the kick is a control tool, not a damage one — 6× staggering is the highest multiplier on the class, and staggering also grants adrenaline.
Two battleaxes arrived alongside them:
| Weapon | Notes |
|---|---|
| Black Metal Battleaxe | — |
| Skull Splittur | Requires Black Forge level 1 (reduced from level 3), and emits a bit of light |
The Skull Splittur station requirement dropping from Black Forge 3 to 1 is a significant accessibility change — it moved the weapon much earlier in the upgrade path than it originally sat.
And battleaxes as a class got faster. Call to Arms reduced the movement speed penalty on Battleaxes, Sledgehammers and Tower Shields — so the heavy loadout became viable at the same moment two new battleaxes appeared.
Bottled Blobs

Five throwables shipped as Bottled Blobs:
| Bottled Blob |
|---|
| Poison |
| Oozer |
| Tar |
| Lava |
| Frost |
The base material, the Blob Vial, is purchasable — which means the supply chain runs through a trader rather than a farm.
One elemental rule is documented, from the test branch: "Frost Blob is now weak against fire and very resistant against frost." That is about the creature rather than the thrown item, but it tells you the elemental logic Iron Gate are applying.
And a recipe change worth knowing: "The Frost Blob Bomb now requires a Drake trophy instead of a Stone Golem trophy." If you are working from an older guide, you are hunting the wrong Mountain enemy.
Two adrenaline balance notes round out the update, and both matter if you are building around trinkets:
- Adrenaline from killing enemies was reduced from 5 to 3.
- Killing Seeker Broods now grants less adrenaline than before — a specific nerf to a specific farming spot.
One more crafting change people trip over: Trinkets are crafted at the Forge, not the Workbench. That was changed during testing, so early guides may point you at the wrong station.
Practical tips
- Bears can swim. Water is not an escape route any more.
- Bears and Viles despawn in 4 seconds after death — loot immediately.
- Viles are Plains Monster faction, not Undead — anti-undead logic does not apply.
- Viles drop Bear Meat, plus a chance of Rotten Meat.
- Fists are not a new class — but Paws of the Bear and Vilebone Maulclaws are new fist weapons. Flesh Rippers still out-damage both.
- The fist kick staggers at 6× with 80 knockback — a control tool, and staggering grants adrenaline.
- Skull Splittur now needs only Black Forge level 1, down from 3.
- The Frost Blob Bomb needs a Drake trophy, not a Stone Golem trophy.
- Trinkets are crafted at the Forge, not the Workbench.
Running your own Valheim server
New enemies mean new farming routes, new material stockpiles and a set of armour everyone wants a copy of — all of which live in a world that needs to be there between sessions rather than only while one person is hosting. A gamever Valheim server keeps your world online around the clock for up to 10 players, takes one-click backups before big updates like the coming 1.0, and applies updates so client and server versions never drift apart.
Conclusion
Call to Arms added the Bear and the Vile, each with a full armour set — Patterns / Loincloth / Headdress of the Bear and Vilebone Cage / Drapes / Visage — plus a fist weapon each — Paws of the Bear and Vilebone Maulclaws. Fists are not a new class: they date from launch and were renamed from Unarmed at Frost Caves, and the pre-existing Flesh Rippers still hit harder than either newcomer. The behaviour details are the useful part: bears can swim, both creatures despawn 4 seconds after death rather than 8, and Viles were moved to the Plains Monster faction rather than the Undead, which changes what interacts with them. Alongside came two battleaxes — the Black Metal Battleaxe and Skull Splittur, the latter dropped to Black Forge level 1 and now emitting light — and five Bottled Blobs in Poison, Oozer, Tar, Lava and Frost, built from a purchasable Blob Vial. Two corrections for anyone using older guides: the Frost Blob Bomb now needs a Drake trophy, and trinkets are crafted at the Forge, not the Workbench.
