Ashenfall's Five Regions in Order: Power Levels, Hazards and What Gates Each One

Ashenfall gets more dangerous the further inland you go, and that is not a difficulty curve — it is the setting's premise. The Anima Twist, the phenomenon that made the continent what it is, grows stronger with depth, and every region's hazard, enemy roster and material tier follows from it. Here are all five regions in order, what each is gated behind, what it gives you, and the hazard that will kill you there.

The Five Regions
| Region | Position | Power level | Signature hazard |
|---|---|---|---|
| Brynmoor | South | 1–2 | None — the starting region |
| Ghornfell | North | 3–4 | Base raids and Hunted events |
| Fellhollow | Far north | 5 | Wither |
| Dowdun Reach | Mountains between Fellhollow and the desert | 6 | Demons and Black Knights |
| Umbral Sands | Far south-east | 7 | Scorch |
The geography is not a straight line. Brynmoor is in the south and Ghornfell in the north, with Fellhollow further north still; Dowdun Reach is the mountainous region that separates Fellhollow from the Umbral Sands in the far south. So progression loops you back down the continent rather than pushing steadily outward.
And the difficulty gradient has an in-world explanation. "The geography becomes more wild and dangerous as one travels further inland, with the Anima Twist phenomenon growing stronger deeper into the continent."
What the Anima Twist is: after the Elder Gods created Gielinor and prepared to sleep, they found some impure, "wild" anima they disliked, and vented it into Ashenfall. It affects the environment, its creatures, its people and magic itself — which is why wood and stone here last hundreds or thousands of years, why wolves grow manes made of leaves and deer grow reed-like fronds, and why some inhabitants became the Amalgamated.
What Each Region Contains

| Region | Subregions |
|---|---|
| Brynmoor | Temple Woods, Bramblemead Valley, Whispering Swamp |
| Ghornfell | Fractured Plains, Bloodblight Swamp, Stormtouched Highlands |
| Fellhollow | Bleakfields Valley, Forgotten Temple, Dragon's Run, Emberwood, Witchwillow Range, Hope's Fall, Lake of Lost Souls, Silverthorn Keep, Coalridge Pass |
| Dowdun Reach | The Approach, The Courtyard, The Nexus, The Library, The Bastion |
| Umbral Sands | Alcarrid Oasis, Dunes of Uzzer, Manafem Plains, The Burning Spire |
Fellhollow is by far the largest at nine subregions, which is worth knowing before you commit an evening to it.
And Dowdun Reach reads differently from the rest. Its subregions are named like the parts of a building — Approach, Courtyard, Nexus, Library, Bastion — because it largely is one: the Black Knight's Fortress.
The resource ladder tracks the regions exactly:
| Region | Materials it introduces |
|---|---|
| Brynmoor | Stone, clay, ash and oak, flax, three fish — no iron |
| Ghornfell | Copper, tin, iron, silver, gold, blurite, granite, sandstone, Dragon Tooth, Anima-Infused Bark |
| Fellhollow | Undead Bone, Draconic Leather, Sacred Oil, Soul Fragments |
| Dowdun Reach | Mithril, Black Metal, Cursed Leather, Mystic Cloth, Demonic Oil, Infernal Fragments |
| Umbral Sands | Adamant, Refined Obsidian, Scorch Leather, Gypsum Wax, Garou Weave, Garou Chits |
Brynmoor having no iron is the single most consequential gap — the region's deposits "were completely depleted" before the game begins, so your first metal comes from Ghornfell.
The Inhabitants

| People | What they are |
|---|---|
| Garou | Bipedal lion-like beings who worshipped the moon goddess Lougrim; society split between noble-born — larger, stronger, capable of magic — and common-born |
| Amalgamated | Humans and creatures mutated by the Anima Twist into elemental forms — fiery skin, leafy hair — and historically persecuted by "pure" humans |
| Goblins | Brought from the mainland by Bandos in the Third Age and abandoned when he retreated; they now worship Velgar as their Big High War God |
| Ogres | Refugees from war, turned into zogres when Imaru infected the region with necrotic energy |
| Dragons | Created and empowered by the dragonkin Cabal as slaves; today all servants of Kuldra |
| Undead | Reanimated in Fellhollow, controlled by Imaru |
| Humans | Brought by Guthix; seemingly wiped out, until the current expedition |
| Elves | Travelled to Ashenfall and settled |
| KotHaar | Lava creatures left in Umbral Sands by the Elder Gods to guard the Lens |
Notice how many of those are stranded rather than native. Goblins abandoned by their god, ogres transformed against their will, dragons bred as slaves, humans wiped out and returning. Ashenfall is a continent of things that were put here — which is consistent with its origin as somewhere the Elder Gods vented what they did not want.
And one thread runs through the whole map: the dragonkin vaults, "ancient facilities containing lost knowledge and technological wonders", protected by guardians created by the dragonkin Lacrussa using refined rune essence. They are the reason every vault guardian is weak to Crush — they are all the same manufacture.
Planning a Route Through It

Region access runs through the primary quest chain rather than through gear checks:
| To reach | You need |
|---|---|
| Ghornfell | Progress through Dragon Slayer |
| Fellhollow | Complete Dragon Slayer, then partially start Withering Heights |
| Dowdun Reach | Black Knight's Fortress, which requires Withering Heights |
| Umbral Sands | Defeat the Black Knight Titan, then open the door at The Bastion |
One access rule is unusually generous and worth knowing. After you first reach Fellhollow — by soul-rifting through the Spectral Door — "you will be granted permanent access to Fellhollow in all worlds." That unlock follows the character across every world they join.
But one thing does not carry. "If you start a fresh world, regardless of how far you have done the quest or fully completed it, you will need to re-activate all of the statues to dispel the barrier" at Emberwood. World state resets; character access does not.
Three practical notes for a group spread across regions:
- Currencies do not convert. Soul Fragments in Fellhollow, Infernal Fragments in Dowdun Reach and Garou Chits in Umbral Sands are three separate economies, so time spent in one region does not buy anything in another.
- Take the right hazard counter. Fellhollow wants Wither resistance and Purification Pools; Umbral Sands wants Scorch counters — shade, Frosted Flavours food, or the Desert set, which has no defence values and exists purely for this.
- Lodestones are the connective tissue. They run on Law Runes, which need Runecrafting 50 — so one person levelling Runecrafting is what makes a five-region world navigable for everyone.
Practical tips
- Five regions: Brynmoor 1–2, Ghornfell 3–4, Fellhollow 5, Dowdun Reach 6, Umbral Sands 7.
- Brynmoor is south, Ghornfell north, Fellhollow far north, Umbral Sands far south — progression loops.
- The Anima Twist strengthens inland — that is the difficulty curve's in-world reason.
- Fellhollow is the largest region at nine subregions.
- Brynmoor has no iron. Your first metal is Ghornfell's.
- Fellhollow access is permanent across all worlds once earned.
- But Emberwood's statues reset on every fresh world.
- Vault guardians are all Lacrussa's work — which is why they all fold to Crush.
- Three regional currencies, none of which convert.
Running your own RuneScape: Dragonwilds server
Five regions is far more world than one session, and a group progressing through them needs the same Ashenfall to still be there next week. A gamever Dragonwilds server keeps it available around the clock for up to six players, updates automatically so client and server versions never drift, and takes one-click backups before disruptive changes.
Conclusion
Ashenfall runs five regions across power levels 1 to 7 — Brynmoor in the south, Ghornfell in the north, Fellhollow further north, the mountainous Dowdun Reach, and the Umbral Sands in the far south-east — and the difficulty curve has a stated in-world cause: the Anima Twist, the wild anima the Elder Gods vented into the continent, which grows stronger further inland and mutated its people into the Amalgamated. Each region introduces a material tier — oak and clay in Brynmoor, six ore types in Ghornfell, undead bone and draconic leather in Fellhollow, mithril and black metal in Dowdun Reach, adamant and refined obsidian in Umbral Sands — and its own hazard, from Ghornfell's base raids through Fellhollow's Wither to the desert's Scorch. Access is gated by the primary quest chain rather than by gear, with Fellhollow unlocking permanently across every world once you have soul-rifted through the Spectral Door, though Emberwood's barrier statues must be re-activated on every fresh world. Bear in mind while planning that the three regional currencies do not convert into one another, so a group's time is best split across regions rather than doubled up in one.
