Abiotic Factor Cooking Guide: Frying, Soup, and Baking Recipes

Branded title card for the Abiotic Factor cooking guide, covering frying, soup, and baking.

Cooking is one of the more mechanically dense systems in Abiotic Factor. The wiki calls it "an essential skill... as it allows players to create increasingly effective Food to manage the Hunger and Thirst needs," and notes that a few crafting materials — Solder and two kinds of Glue — also come out of the cooking pot rather than a workbench. Cooking XP comes mainly from frying, baking, and making soups, and your Cooking Skill level gates which stations you can use: soup at level 3, the Convection Oven and Raw Dough recipe (needed for baking) at level 10, and the Advanced Oven at level 13. This guide breaks the system into its three cooking methods plus the ovens that unlock them, with the exact numbers the wiki lists.

Cooking Skill Levels and What They Unlock

Skill level changes the quality tier of anything fried or baked, and each tier restores more Hunger and Thirst per item. The wiki lists five bands: Levels 0-4 are normal quality (base values); Levels 5-9 are "carefully cooked" at +30%; Levels 10-14 are "well cooked" at +45%; Levels 15-19 are "beautifully cooked" at +60%; and Level 20 is "expertly cooked" at +75%.

Two wiki notes matter here. First, "Displayed Hunger and Thirst will show as rounded down," so a listed value can slightly undersell the real restoration. Second, "Fried foods will display the quality before the name of the food where baked foods will not" — the quality tag shows up only on fried items, not baked ones, even though both get the same bonus.

Frying: Pans, Stoves, and Burnt Food

Frying needs a Frying Pan or Frying Pan (Makeshift) on a Stove or powered Portable Stove. The wiki notes the Office Sector cafeteria "has an Industrial Stove with a single useable cooktop," and that Kitchen Stoves "require a Reinforced Hose to repair" — both practical bottlenecks for a group cooking in bulk.

Equip the raw food and place it in the pan to start cooking. Leave it too long and it overcooks into burned food, which "restores minimal hunger and depletes thirst" — leave that even longer and it becomes Bio Scrap. On the upside, "Fried foods will have their decay reset to their maximum value," so frying doubles as preservation.

The fried-food list runs from quick fixes to elaborate combos. Raw "Egg" & Peccary Tartine is among the highest on the hunger side at 71.3 Hunger / 23 Thirst for a 1:30 cook — tied with Cooked Fr-eyed Rice, also 71.3 Hunger (29.75 Thirst, 1:40 cook). Buttery Popcorn Kernels cook into Cooked Buttery Popcorn for 27 Hunger but -8 Thirst, and the wiki specifically warns that "Cooked Buttery Popcorn's thirst reduction will actually get worse with increased levels of cooking" — a higher Cooking skill makes this snack worse, not better.

Soup: Recipes, Portions, and the Math

Soup unlocks at Cooking level 3, and the wiki notes a shortcut: "Analyzing the pot of solder in front of The Blacksmith raises Cooking to level 3, if lower." Certain Jobs add a flat Cooking bonus too — Epimedical Bionomicist +1, Phytogenetic Botanist +2, Somatic Gastrologist +4 — and the Hobbyist Chef Trait doubles Cooking XP outright.

You need a Cooking Pot (or the Makeshift version) filled with clean Water — from a Water Cooler, a Sink, or a Water Bottle. Short on clean Water, boiling Tainted Water works at a 4:1 ratio: the wiki states "one pot of Tainted Water (1000ml) produces 250ml of Water," so every 1000ml boiled nets only 250ml drinkable. Antejuice is listed as a suitable substitute for water entirely.

Place the filled pot on a powered stove and add ingredients. Match a known recipe and the pot renames itself and logs to the Compendium; get it wrong and it usually becomes Bad Soup — though if only one ingredient is off, "the proper recipe will be added to the Compendium when the soup finishes cooking, despite resulting in Bad Soup," as long as the total ingredient count matches.

The portion math is where soup pulls ahead of everything else. Quoting the wiki directly: "each cooked soup produces 4 'portions' collectable with a Soup Bowl, or 6 once Cooking 17 is reached. A filled Soup Bowl can hold 2 portions before it is emptied, meaning each cooked pot of soup produces 8 edible portions, or 12 with Cooking 17." That's why the wiki's worked example is so lopsided: a raw Military M.R.E. restores 30 Hunger / 0 Thirst eaten straight, but cooked into Sustenance Soup (18 Hunger / 16 Thirst per serving) across 8-12 servings, the math is 18 × 8 = 144 up to 18 × 12 = 216 total Hunger, and 16 × 8 = 128 up to 16 × 12 = 192 total Thirst — from one M.R.E. The wiki's stated ceiling of 444 Hunger from one pot (Cooking 17 + A&L Mega-Stew) checks out the same way: A&L Mega-Stew lists 37 Hunger per serving, and 37 × 12 servings = 444.

Baking and Ovens

Baking unlocks at Cooking level 10, alongside the Convection Oven and the Raw Dough recipe it needs. Cooking level 13 unlocks the Advanced Oven, which the wiki describes as having "2 baking trays and cooking timers" — a throughput upgrade over the base Convection Oven (the wiki doesn't state the Convection Oven's own tray count).

Unlike frying, "baked foods retain the same decay level before and after cooking" — baking doesn't refresh decay the way frying does. The simplest baked recipe is Raw Dough into Bread, 12.5 Hunger / 5 Thirst for a 2:00 bake; Raw Pumpkin Dough into Pumpkin Bread scales that to 37.5 Hunger for the same time and thirst. Larger single-serve dishes go further — Raw Stuffed Roast Peccary bakes into Cooked Stuffed Roast Peccary for 63 Hunger / 28.75 Thirst over 1:40. Several recipes also divide into multiple portions: Raw Shadowberry Pie becomes Baked Shadowberry Pie, sliced into 6 servings at 28.25 Hunger / 17.325 Thirst each, over a 3:20 bake.

Practical tips

  • Below Cooking level 3, analyzing the pot of solder in front of The Blacksmith is a free shortcut into Soup without frying first.
  • Don't rely on Buttery Popcorn for thirst — its penalty gets worse, not better, as your Cooking skill rises.
  • Short on clean Water, boil Tainted Water at the documented 4:1 ratio (1000ml in, 250ml out) instead of trekking to a Water Cooler.
  • A Soup Bowl only holds 2 portions before it's full, so plan how many bowls your group carries before committing a full pot of ingredients.

Running your own Abiotic Factor server

The wiki notes that "Hunger and thirst accumulation rates can be modified in the Sandbox Settings before starting a server" — useful if your group wants cooking and foraging to matter more, or less, than default. Running that server yourselves means your Cooking Pot, Compendium unlocks, and stocked ovens stay exactly where you left them between sessions.

Conclusion

Abiotic Factor's cooking system rewards specialization: frying is fast, resets decay, and holds the biggest single-serve dishes (the 71.3-Hunger Tartine and Fr-eyed Rice), baking holds its decay level across breads, pies, and roasts, and soup — once you clear Cooking level 3 and especially level 17 — turns one ingredient like an M.R.E. into 144-216 Hunger and 128-192 Thirst across 8-12 servings. Push toward Cooking level 10 for the Convection Oven and baking access, then level 13 for the two-tray Advanced Oven, and check the Sandbox Settings if you're running this on your own server.
